The lost tapes?
Many years ago, JK possessed a cassette (ask your father) of an impromptu Ashtray Prophets performance in a suite at Wonders Hall, MSU. The cassette's song list was written in pencil. It included renditions of popular AP songs with horns. The blower was a friend of a friend. A second guitarist also joined MH. JK remembers loaning it to MH one day, but that's the last that's been seen of it ...

Rumor has it that "the lost tapes" are somewhere in MH's home studio. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he was asked about these tapes and he grumbled something about the "poor quality of the recordings".
Those close to MH suspect he is trying to prevent their release on CD due to some rather unimpressive moments caught on tape. Specifically, on one of the tapes, a rather annoying drunk ex-girlfriend who kept on begging for country songs and singing out of key country-style yodels during the set, and the other tape was cut short by a dispute over whether or not the first two chords of a song were plagiarized from another duo. Some say that was the impetus for that to be the last jam session between these two bands.
I've written MH a few times to get him to release the tapes or at least return them, and I think he's willing to if he could just remember long enough.
I know a friend of a friend who could get to the singer, who was quoted in Spin last year as saying, "I wish MH would just give me back my fuckin' tape." I think the singer would be willing to talk about having MH just sent a digital version along the Information Superhighway for the time being. Nothing fancy. For now, both sides could agree to release a snippet of the bitching ex-girlfriend.
PS. Did I hear that The Bird Man was recently spotted on the 'Net. ???
